Crave - Omnivorous ramblings from the rusty coast of Vancouver Island

Oh SWOON!  I just discovered another Vancouver Island food blog.  I have been hoping to find one for a while, so if anyone knows of any others, please let me know.  My new discovery is Crave by the queen of rust who lives in Nanaimo and also does the produce box thing.  In fact, she has a recipe for pickled garlic shoots, which are sitting in my fridge, neglected, because I had no ideas for how to use them.  Thanks, queen of rust! 

Crave has been around since 2005 and why I've never found it before is a mystery to me, since it is a great read.  What a fabulous new addition to my food blog reading list.  Go read her now, but please come back here once in a while too!

The Foodie Blog Roll

As if I didn't have enough food blogs that I love to read on a daily basis, now there is the Foodie Blog Roll to tempt me in 100 new ways.  And of course I've joined myself. 

I haven't looked through all the blogs on the list yet, but some that have caught my eye are the following:

Chomping the Big Apple: living and eating in New York.  Perfect for helping me live my NY dreams vicariously. 

Dine and Dish:  I like a mom who isn't afraid to make a cake with a rum glaze for a one-year-old's birthday.  M'hijo's first birthday cake was leftover black cake from Christmas.  And I don't think he had a piece of it either. 

What's on my plate:  Rare beef salad!  Coq au vin pasta!  Need I say more?

The Humble Housewife:  Host of the Made My Kid Eat! event, which I think I may just have to partcipate in.  If I can think of anything that Sahsez, my picky seven-year-old, likes to eat, that is.

Anna and Graeme's Farmer's Market Debut!

Well, they're not farmers, but my friends Anna and Graeme (ok, I only know Graeme slightly, but he's clearly a kindred spirit) had their debut at the East Oxford Farmer's Market yesterday, and chronicled the adventure on their great food blog, Being and Thyme (I confess, I don't understand the name.  Maybe they will enlighten me). 

I am so happy for them!

Even if you just love cooking a teensy little bit, you should check out Sam's pictorial blog post chronicling her adventuresome day of cooking with Amanda Berne, who is Senior Editor at 10 Speed Press.  Gosh, I'd love to have the opportunity to cook on this level some day.  Perhaps when M'hijo graduates high school.

Also interesting is the spreadsheet of notes on each dish.  I wonder where the pomello went.  Perhaps in the salad. 

New Recipe Number 8 and The Little Piggy

I made chicken liver pate for the first time this weekend.  Actually, I just remembered that I still have some in the fridge.  Aw yeah, I think I know what I'll be doing for lunch.

Anyway, I made the pate from the recipe in another cookbook I love: Appetite by Nigel Slater, but you should make it by following these awesome, pictorial instructions from a site I just discovered called The Little Piggy. Run by Christabel Padmore, a local woman who seems to know tonnes about food and runs her own catering business, Little Piggy is my kind of website: foodie and local. And girlfriend eats out!  Damn, her reviews page makes me jealous (and hungry). 

I will definitely be adding The Little Piggy to my list of recommended food sites in the side bar.  Now I'm off to finish off my pate.
